World Rugby has announced three significant law changes designed to enhance the speed and entertainment value of the game, emphasizing fan engagement and player safety. Effective from July 1, these changes include abolishing the ‘Dupont’s Law,’ which prevents players from being put onside by opposition actions during a kick in open play, to address the increasing occurrences of ‘kick tennis.’ Additionally, teams can no longer opt for a scrum from a free-kick, promoting faster gameplay by requiring free-kicks to be tapped or kicked. The controversial ‘crocodile roll’ maneuver will also be banned, with penalties enforced for its use.

In parallel, World Rugby is trialing new laws, including the replacement of a red-carded player after 20 minutes, and introducing a shot clock to reduce setup times for scrums and lineouts. Other trials include modifications to maul play and marking rules, with protections expanded for scrum-halves near rucks, tackles, or mauls.

In Welsh rugby news, Cardiff prop Ciaran Parker is retiring from professional rugby at 28, following a challenging season marred by injuries and suspension. Parker’s career, which included stints with London Irish, Sale Sharks, Munster, Jersey Reds, and Leinster, concludes as he transitions to a career in financial planning, coinciding with the expected arrival of his first child.

In other news, England’s number eight Billy Vunipola received a formal warning from the Rugby Football Union following a drunken incident in Majorca but faces no further sanctions. Vunipola, who was involved in a public disturbance during a team trip, expressed regret over his actions which contradicted the core values of rugby. The RFU’s warning will remain on his record for five years, serving as a potential reference in future disciplinary actions. Vunipola acknowledges his challenges with alcohol, linking his behavior to a lapse after a prolonged period of abstinence.
