A family brawl at a McDonald’s in Baglan, Cardiff, resulted in the manager being knocked unconscious and a court sentencing four individuals involved. The incident, triggered by a dispute over a burger order, led to significant chaos and fear among customers and staff.

On the evening of November 4th last year, Thomas Hamilton and his sister-in-law visited the busy restaurant to lodge a complaint about a burger order. Hamilton’s confrontational behaviour escalated quickly; when his sister-in-law attempted to calm him, he pushed her aside. Hamilton then physically assaulted a manager, which resulted in a violent scuffle as two managers tried to eject him from the premises.

After leaving the restaurant, Hamilton’s sister-in-law called her father, Huw Jones, claiming Hamilton was being “battered.” Jones arrived shirtless, shouting and threatening the managers. He was soon joined by Hamilton and his two sons, Sam and Kiayer Jones. The four men stormed into McDonald’s, wreaking havoc by smashing tills and screens and throwing metal trays, wet floor signs, and bags of food.

The situation turned dire when Huw Jones threw a stool with a heavy metal base at a manager, hitting him in the head and knocking him unconscious. The injured manager, who suffered a bleeding head wound, was taken to the hospital. The violent outburst led to junior staff escaping through the drive-thru window and young customers fleeing in fear.

The damages and business disruption cost McDonald’s £5,799. In court, Huw Jones, 54, was sentenced to 12 months in prison after pleading guilty to affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. His past convictions for violence were noted. Hamilton, 20, Sam Jones, 25, and Kiayer Jones, 27, who also pleaded guilty to affray, received 12-month prison sentences, suspended for 18 months. They were additionally ordered to complete rehabilitation courses and adhere to nightly curfews for four months.

Judge Ben Blakemore criticised the defendants for their hooligan behaviour, emphasising the absurdity of their actions being triggered by a burger order. He stated that all four men should be “wholly ashamed” of their conduct, which had terrorised the community and caused significant harm and disruption.
