Student accommodation developer Fusion Group has received the green light for a major project in Cardiff city centre. The development, located at Longcross Court on Newport Road, will feature over 700 beds across 488 units, spread across several linked blocks, with the tallest rising 18 floors.
Designed by Corstorphine & Wright, with Amber Management & Engineering Services handling M&E consultancy, the project aims to achieve BREEAM Outstanding certification. Fusion plans to incorporate renewable energy systems, including air source heat pumps and photovoltaic (PV) panels.
The student housing complex will include a range of facilities such as a wellbeing studio, juice bar, fitness suite, and landscaped outdoor spaces. The development is expected to enhance both the public realm and provide much-needed housing in Cardiff.
Fusion has secured a forward purchase agreement with UK-listed REIT Picton Property Income to acquire the site upon receiving planning permission. Construction is set to begin in early 2025, with completion anticipated in time for the 2028/29 academic year.
Julian Evans, Fusion’s land and planning director, highlighted the scheme’s importance for Cardiff, stating, “The Longcross Court development will improve the public realm for the community and provide essential housing for the city.”
