If you’ve ever visited Cardiff, chances are you’ve spent a delightful rainy day exploring the rich exhibits of the National Museum. From ancient fossils to modern art, the museum is a sanctuary for curious minds and art enthusiasts. Despite recent concerns about its funding, the museum continues to captivate visitors with its diverse collections.

Notable Exhibits at the National Museum

Woolly Mammoths Come Alive: Since December 1991, the mammoths and ice exhibit has featured mechanical models of a mother and baby woolly mammoth. Originally part of a loan from various European collections, this exhibit also includes a woolly rhinoceros, a giant deer, and other prehistoric animals, offering a glimpse into Wales’ ancient wildlife.

A Step Back in Time with Lily’s Fossil: In 2021, a young girl named Lily from Barry discovered a 220-million-year-old dinosaur footprint at Bendrick’s Bay. This rare find from the Upper Triassic period is now proudly displayed at the museum, capturing the imaginations of visitors of all ages.

Van Gogh’s Reflections: A 1887 self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh, part of the “art of the selfie” exhibition, showcases the depth of one of the most prolific self-portrait artists. This piece, on loan from Musée D’Orsay until January 2025, highlights Van Gogh’s economical approach to his art due to financial constraints.

Cosmic Journey with the Iron Meteorite: The oldest artifact in the museum is a four-billion-year-old iron meteorite from Namibia. Weighing 260kg, it is part of an impressive collection of meteorites that narrate the history of our solar system.

Dracoraptor hangani – Wales’ Own Dinosaur: Discovered in 2014 by brothers Nick and Rob Hanigan at Lavernock beach, the Dracoraptor hangani is a 200-million-year-old dinosaur, a relative of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The museum features both the original fossils and a life-sized model of this prehistoric creature.

The Historic Jenkins Vase: Originating as a Roman altar in 1489 Naples, the Jenkins vase was transformed in the 18th century. It illustrates the marriage of Paris and Helen, adding a classic touch to the museum’s diverse collection.

Reframing History: Initiated during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests, the Reframing Picton project seeks to address the complex legacy of figures like Sir Thomas Picton. Artworks from Trinidadian artists now accompany his portrait, offering a broader perspective on his impact.

The Davies Sisters’ Legacy: Gwendoline and Margaret Davies enriched the museum immensely by donating over 260 artworks, including masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh, and Botticelli. Their contributions have dramatically transformed the museum’s art collection, leaving a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of Wales.
